Our work placement students lift the lid on volunteering at Crimestoppers

We’re Alice and Darmina, both third-year Criminology students at the University of Greenwich.
As we’re fascinated by crime, its factors and its effects on a societal level, we’ve been delighted to join Crimestoppers this year as work placement students.
The study of Criminology draws on several other fields, such as Psychology, Sociology, Law and Anthropology. Highlights of our lectures include diverse issues, such as mental health disorders, drug consumption, hate crime, gender-based inequality and oppression, and environmental harms.
During our studies, we’ve looked at the workings of the Criminal Justice System, as well as getting involved in extracurricular activities in our spare time, such as observing trials or visiting prisons. This has given us the ability to think across boundaries and to be critical.
Our Crimestoppers work placement has given us the chance to put our existing theoretical knowledge into practice.
Alice: Crimestoppers has helped me develop myself on a professional level, as it’s given me the opportunity to really see Criminology in action. It’s also like no regular 9 to 5 job, as you get to work on all sorts of exciting projects. For example, we’ve worked with Fearless, the Crimestoppers service aimed at young people, as well as the Events team for the London Marathon."
The experience gained during our time at Crimestoppers will prepare us for life in general and for a prospective career in Forensic Psychology, which is what we both aspire to.
Darmina: "Not only has the placement helped me evolve as an individual, but it’s also helpful in terms of job opportunities. A work placement can definitely make the difference between two candidates, as employers are always looking for individuals who have a first-hand experience with their area of study."

"Crime is a part of our everyday life; we’ve all witnessed things that aren’t right, yet how many of us are willing to come forward and report it to the police? That’s why I chose Crimestoppers, because it encourages people to speak up against crime – as it’s a completely anonymous service, it gives individuals a sense of security."

"This placement is certainly helping me professionally, but it’s also helped me grow as a person. Working with such a consolidated team has made me get out of my shell little by little and be more confident and sociable."
