International Women’s Day profile - Ella Rabaiotti: "I've been inspired by many strong female leaders"

Our Wales National Manager Ella talks about her incredibly varied and challenging role, and shares who has inspired her to succeed.

How long have you worked for Crimestoppers?

I started working for the charity in 2016 after a 15-year career in the Probation Service.

What’s your current role?

I’m the National Manager for Wales.

What does your role entail?

It’s an extremely varied role which ranges from running Crimestoppers campaigns, events and conferences to developing new youth projects, promoting the charity with our volunteer committee and delivering dozens of community presentations!

What skills are important to have in your role?

Effective Communication is key - with partners, volunteers, and the public to build trust and respect in Crimestoppers and our work. Also the ability to work flexibly, independently and creatively.

How have you found being a woman, working in this sector (and others)?

During my career in Probation, I was inspired by many strong female leaders who were great role models. They encouraged me to be courageous, collaborative and creative in my work.

What are the current challenges for women working in your particular area?

A constant challenge for the charity sector is sustainable funding to ensure our impact has longevity.

As female charity leaders we should be confident about the importance and value of our contribution and pro-actively seek opportunities to develop our vital work. For example,  I was the first Regional Manager in Wales and now I lead a team of Fearless youth workers. I saw the critical opportunity to contribute to the serious violence prevention agenda and demonstrated to police commissioners the real potential for building the Fearless service in Wales.

What advice would you give someone looking to start working in your sector?

I would consider volunteering first. That gives you an opportunity to find out more about an organisation and its work. Crimestoppers has a great tradition of involving volunteers who are passionate about helping to give people the power to speak up about crime.

Which women inspire you?

My grandmother – her kindness and compassion for others. We can always do with more kindness in the world!
