Appeal for info after Openreach cable thefts in Essex, Cambridgeshire & London

Up to £1,000 reward available for information that results in the conviction of those responsible.

Crimestoppers, as an independent charity, and Openreach, the digital infrastructure company, are appealing for information after a recent series of major cable thefts from the communications network in Essex, Cambridgeshire and south-east London.

Large sections of live cable have been pulled from the underground communications network, leaving thousands of homes and businesses without use of their phone lines, broadband and TV services - no landline, no internet, no cable TV.

Local people’s daily lives have been further disrupted where roads have had to be closed for long periods of time, and significant damage has also been caused to farmlands and parks, where cables have been dragged across fields and green spaces.

Whilst Openreach engineers are working as quickly as possible to restore services to those customers affected, this sort of theft by criminal gangs has a terrible impact on communities, and can even have a significant impact on local emergency and public services.

Openreach has a partnership with us that offers a reward of up to £1,000 for information on cable thefts leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

“This is not a victimless crime and we are urging anyone with information on those behind the thefts to speak up. We know that some people feel unable to speak directly to the authorities, which is why Crimestoppers is here to help.

“You can tell our charity what you know whilst protecting your identity and staying 100% anonymous. Always. We’ve kept that promise since we began over 31 years ago.

“No one will ever know you contacted us and your information could help protect communities and individuals from harm and disruption. Call 0800 555 111 or use our simple online form, and remain completely anonymous.”
Alexa Loucas,, Crimestoppers Regional Manager

“We’re working closely with the police to catch those responsible, and have deployed additional security enhancements across the affected areas, but we also need your help. Please be vigilant, and if you’ve seen anything, report it to the charity Crimestoppers.”
Bernie Auguste,, Director of Security Services for Openreach

***Note: Information passed directly to police will not qualify. The reward will only qualify if information is passed to our 0800 555 111 number or via our untraceable anonymous online form***
