Appeal with Openreach after arson attacks in Glasgow

Appeal with Openreach after arson attacks in Glasgow

Openreach, the UK’s largest phone and broadband network, and Crimestoppers are appealing for information after arson attacks in the early hours of 24th and 25th April in Springboig Avenue, Glasgow.

Two underground footway boxes were set on fire at around 01.00 on the 24th April and again in the early hours of the 25th, resulting in several telephone and broadband cables being destroyed.

The damage left a number of residential and business customers in Cranhill without use of their phone lines, broadband and TV services. Openreach engineers worked on repairs throughout the weekend to restore services to those customers affected, and most are now back in service.

Openreach has a partnership with our charity, offering a reward of up to £1,000 for information on cable thefts leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. If you have any information on these incidents, please contact 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111 or use their simple and secure Anonymous Online Form.

“These incidents have disrupted essential broadband services and can even impact on local emergency and essential public services. Happening at a time when we are confined to our home shows how little these criminals care about the consequences of their actions. To be damaging essential communications cables during a global pandemic is especially heartless.

“This is why we are urging people – anyone who may know of the people behind these arson attacks - to come forward. We know that some people feel unable to speak directly to the authorities, which is why our charity is here to help support those with crime information. We guarantee that you will stay 100% anonymous. Always. Like the millions of others who have trusted us with their crime information since we began over 32 years ago, Crimestoppers can pass on what you know to the relevant people and no one, other than you, will know you contacted our charity.

“You can report anonymously via this website  or call our Contact Centre which is open 24/7 on freephone 0800 555 111. Please do the right thing so that we can prevent more communities from being even further isolated without essential communications during this time of lockdown.”

Angela Parker,, National Manager for Scotland

“These incidents have severely impacted the day-to-day lives of people across Springboig, especially during this difficult time where people are staying inside because of coronavirus and are very reliant on their telephone and broadband to communicate with friends, family and loved ones.

“We are working very closely with Police Scotland to catch those who are responsible and have deployed additional security enhancements across the area, but we also need your help. Please be vigilant and if you saw anything suspicious on or around the time of the incidents, report it. If you prefer not to speak directly to police, then please contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously.”

Bernie Auguste,, Director of Security Services for Openreach
