Sheffield: Son appeals to 'better nature' of anyone with information over Patricia Grainger's murder

The son of a young mother who was brutally murdered 23 years ago has made a heartfelt appeal for information, as a £10,000 reward via the charity Crimestoppers is made available for a further three months.

Patricia Grainger was 25 years old when she was attacked and murdered in the summer of 1997. Her body was found on Sunday 10 August 1997 at Hartley Brook Dike. She had been living nearby with her young son Danny and her parents in Parson Cross, Sheffield. Patricia had learning disabilities and had not been seen by her family for almost a week.

A group of children discovered Patricia’s body as they walked in the area known locally as “The Brook”, which backs on to the rear of houses on Deerlands Avenue on the Parson Cross estate.
Her body was found semi naked and the subsequent post-mortem examination established that Patricia had suffered multiple stab wounds.

A reward of up to £10,000 is being offered by Crimestoppers for information given exclusively and anonymously that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for Patricia Grainger’s murder.
Patricia Grainger’s family have put up £5,000, which Crimestoppers has matched to reach a total reward of up to £10,000 for information.

“No-one can ever image the pain and suffering our family have had to suffer as a result of my mum’s brutal murder. Whilst many years have passed, the memory of what happened to my vulnerable mum hasn’t gone. She was treated as if she wasn’t human and brutalised in the most sickening way. She trusted anyone who showed her interest and they abused that trust.

“Someone in the community must know what happened to Pat and has sat on this secret for decades. We are appealing to your better nature. With our reward through Crimestoppers still available for three more months, there’s still time for you to do the right thing, to tell the truth and help us get answers.”
Danny Grainger,, Patricia's son

“Patricia was an innocent young woman with learning difficulties who was taken advantage of and treated in a truly horrific way. No one should be allowed to get away with such callousness and violence. Our charity is here to help and gives people the option of staying anonymous whilst doing the right thing. Every day, over a thousand people use our anonymous online form or call our UK Contact Centre on freephone 0800 555 111. We’ve kept our promise of anonymity to everyone who trusts us since we began over 32 years ago.

“We know that the community often has answers and whilst many years have passed, now is your chance to put things right, to speak up 100% anonymously and help Patricia’s family get the justice they so deserve.

“If you have information, please speak up. You may be eligible for a reward. With your help, the family could finally have some of the answers they have been seeking for far too long.”
