Another cable attack in Thamesmead prompts our appeal

Up to £1,000 reward available for information that results in the conviction of those responsible

Our charity and Openreach, the UK’s largest phone and broadband network, are appealing for information after essential communications cables were damaged and stolen in south-east London.

A large section of live cable has been pulled from the underground communications network at the junction of Crossways and Glendale Way, Thamesmead, SE28. The theft occurred between 1am and 3am on Wednesday 15 July 2020.

The damage has left hundreds of residential and business customers in Thamesmead without use of their phone lines, broadband and TV services. Significant damage has also been caused to the adjacent public space, where cables have been dragged into parkland. Openreach engineers are working as quickly as possible to restore services to those customers affected.

This incident follows similar attacks in August and November of last year.

Openreach has a partnership with our charity that offers a reward of up to £1,000 for information on cable thefts leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. If you have any information on this incident, please contact us 100% anonymously on 0800 555 111 or use the Anonymous Online Form.

“It’s truly shocking that those behind this attack could be so heartless. It’s not only criminal, but incredibly callous to damage essential communications cables in the middle of a global pandemic. This vital infrastructure helps provide a lifeline to people struggling, like so many of us, to cope with all the disruption and isolation during these worrying times.

“If you know who is responsible for this attack, please contact our charity and tell us what you know. We guarantee everyone who calls Crimestoppers, or completes our simple and secure Anonymous Online Form, stays 100% anonymous. Always. Every day we hear from people who are keen to do the right thing, but don’t want to give their personal details. Please speak up for the sake of the communities who have been negatively affected.”

“These incidents have severely impacted the day-to-day lives of people across south east London. We are working closely with the police to catch those who are responsible and have deployed additional security enhancements across the area, but we also need your help. Please be vigilant and if you saw anything suspicious on or around the time of the incidents, report it. If you prefer not to speak directly to police, then please contact the charity Crimestoppers anonymously.”
