Campaign launched to prevent serious organised crime in Gainsborough

Our charity has launched a new campaign, focusing on drug dealers operating in Gainsborough and we are asking people to speak up anonymously if they have information about those involved.

We have joined with Lincolnshire Police and West Lindsey District Council, to build upon the successful work that has already been delivered in Gainsborough, to reduce crime as a part of the Violent Crime Reduction Initiative (VCRI).

Drug crime is a problem for many towns and cities throughout the UK and it affects millions of people of all ages and from all walks of life. Drug crime is often the crime that underpins so many others and has many other related crimes and consequences, such as drug manufacturing, the exploitation of vulnerable people, drug addiction and serious violence.

In the year up to March 2020, compared to the previous 12-month period between March 2018 and March 2019, violence without injury in Gainsborough was up by 28.9%. Grievous bodily harm with intent also rose in the same period, by 5.6%.

The 8-week campaign will include a digital advan, targeted social media, billboard advertising and door-to-door leafleting, to raise awareness of serious organised crime signs and how to contact us anonymously with crime information.

“Drug dealers have a major impact across communities as their activities can involve using weapons, violence and intimidation to people traffick, money launder and sell class A drugs. Drug crime is often hidden in other activities and people are often exploited in plain sight. The consequences can ripple into the everyday life of people who are not involved.

“Please keep your eyes peeled for suspicious behaviour such as someone not having a job but apparently living a lavish lifestyle; or a business that is cash only and yet they rarely seem to trade or advertise their services.

“We value safe communities and are keen to hear from people who are aware of those bringing serious crime to Gainsborough. Let us also know about vulnerable people you are concerned about, while staying 100% anonymous. Always.

“In over 32 years we have always kept our promise of anonymity to everyone who contacts us. Call 0800 555 111 or use our anonymous online form. We cannot trace calls or get IP addresses. Not even we will know your identity when you contact us to pass on information.”
Lydia Patsalides, , Crimestoppers East Midlands Manager

“I am clearly very pleased that both the council and the police are taking this positive and proactive action along with the support of Crimestoppers to run this campaign.

“I have been aware there has been a drug issue in the town for a number of years and have been calling for action to support and protect local residents. Drugs impact the quality of life of residents living in the town, which results in anti-social behaviour and drug related crimes.

“In light of the recent police enforcement in Gainsborough relating to drug supply, I welcome this campaign. I hope it will send a clear message that we will not tolerate drug supply in our town and I would encourage people to report intelligence on suspicious activity and crimes which can have a damaging and emotional impact on the lives and communities of people in the town.”
Cllr Trevor Young, , West Lindsey District Council
