Romance fraud - fall for the person, not the profile

Romance fraud - fall for the person, not the profile

Crimestoppers is working in partnership with the City of London Police to support a national campaign reminding the public to stay safe online as reports of romance fraud rise 26% in a year.

Action Fraud has received over 400 reports a month from victims of romance fraud across the UK, with losses reported by victims averaging just over £10,000 per person.

Reports received by Action Fraud have increased since the start of the Coronavirus outbreak earlier this year, indicating people may have met, and begun talking to, romance fraudsters during the national lockdown.

The top five platforms where victims reported first interacting with the criminals committing romance fraud were Facebook, Plenty of Fish, Instagram, Tinder and Match.com.

As key partners in this campaign, during the month of October Match Group will also be raising awareness on their platforms to support users on how to spot the signs of romance fraud and how to protect themselves online.
