London: Women on the periphery of knife crime urged to speak up to save lives

We've launched a new campaign - Hard Calls Save Lives - to address the barriers which may stop people from calling and providing crucial, life-saving information about knife crime in London.

Last year, Crimestoppers passed on 14,000 intelligence reports to the Metropolitan Police Service; and appeals for London’s Most Wanted criminals led to 45 arrests being made.

Our new campaign, which runs until the end of the year, will see a number of graphics advertised online via websites from Monday, 14 September. They will be targeted at people within areas most affected by violent crime, and are particularly aimed at inspiring women who may have a close relationship to someone on the periphery of knife crime - mums, sisters, aunties – to report vital information.

The imagery will also be shared widely on social media, and aims to counteract people’s incorrect perceptions of Crimestoppers - emphasising our charity’s independence and anonymity guarantee – to inform them that small details can make a difference in reducing knife crime and the harm it causes to communities.

We know that some people might not feel comfortable contacting the police, so as an independent charity, Crimestoppers is always another option. Anything shared with us is 100% anonymous and no one will ever know that you’ve given information. When you call us, you will not be asked to reveal your name, nor do we make a note of gender, apparent age, ethnicity or your accent. No calls are ever recorded, and our charity’s specially-trained Call Handlers will make sure your report does not include any personal details. They then pass on the information to those best placed to deal with it, without any witness statements from you or court involvement.

Here at Crimestoppers, no piece of information linked to knife crime is insignificant or too small. Do you know anyone in your area that carries a knife, or where a weapon has been hidden? Have you seen drug deals taking place in the area? Are cars arriving at unusual times of the day and night? Whether the information is something you’ve heard first-hand or hearsay, your call could help build a picture and form the last piece of the puzzle.

“The purpose of this knife crime campaign is to inform and inspire the community and encourage people to come forward and share information 100% anonymously.

“We completely understand how difficult it can be to pick up the phone and call us: you might not realise that everyone who contacts our charity stays completely anonymous, or you might not understand what kind of information is useful to us.

“I’d like to reassure Londoners that Crimestoppers is an entirely independent charity working to help keep communities safe. We are not an extension of the police. No detail you might have is too small - every bit of information helps towards the fight against knife crime in London. The role of the public in speaking up about knife crime cannot be underestimated – one phone call could literally stop another young person being killed.

“If you have any information about knife crime, please get in touch – your anonymity is guaranteed. It can feel like a hard call, but it could save the life of someone’s son or daughter.”
